Golden State Warriors vs Orlando Magic Preview, What to Watch
The Golden State Warriors, led by Jimmy Butler, will travel to Orlando on Thursday to begin a five-game road trip.
The Warriors have improved to eighth place in the Western Conference, just a half-game behind the sixth-place Los Angeles Clippers, and are 6-1 since signing Butler.
Although Butler only scored six points in Tuesday night's Warriors 128-92 victory over Charlotte, he has been a vital member of the team thanks to his leadership and defense.
The Magic have dropped down the ladder while Golden State is moving up. Orlando, which was once 17-9 and third in the East, is now in seventh place, four games behind Detroit, which is in sixth place.
Tuesday's 40-point thumping of the Cavaliers was the Magic's worst defeat of the season.
The Magic also lost Moritz Wagner to a torn ACL shortly before Christmas, while Banchero missed a significant portion of the season due to an oblique ailment. In addition, guard Jalen Suggs has been sidelined for the past 13 games due to a quad ailment. This season, the Magic are 9-16 without Suggs in the lineup.
The Magic still lead the NBA in team defense, allowing an average of 105.5 points per game, while Banchero is second on the team with 23 points per game. However, with only 103.9 points, Orlando is bottom in terms of scoring.
Guard Cole Anthony hyperextended his left knee against Cleveland, adding to Orlando's problems. He was scheduled for a follow-up evaluation on Wednesday. Anthony's status for Thursday's game against the Warriors is labeled as uncertain. Mosley is looking for any positive indications.
Jonathan Kuminga, a forward with the Warriors, missed Tuesday's victory over Charlotte due to an ankle injury. Steph Curry leads Golden State with 23.3 points per game, and eight other players average double figures.
Golden State, which appears to have found its rhythm after the Butler deal, has cautious optimism after opening 12-3 before leveling down.
Denver Nuggets vs Milwaukee Bucks Preview, What to Watch
Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks host Nikola Jokic and the visiting Denver Nuggets on Thursday night, marking the first meeting between two MVP contenders in more than a year.
Denver comes into this game having defeated the Indiana Pacers 125-116 on Monday in the opening game of a four-game road trip. Although the Nuggets have won ten of their last eleven games, the Lakers completely outplayed them in the most recent contest.
Aaron Gordon led the Nuggets with 25 points, but six other players scored in double figures against Indiana. In the victory, Jokic contributed 18 points and provided a career-high 19 assists.
The Bucks defeated to the Rockets 100-97 on Tuesday night in Houston, ending their four-game winning streak.
In the last minute, Damian Lillard had two clear chances to tie the game from beyond the arc, but he was unable to make either. On 7 of 22 shots from the field, he scored 22 points.
After the game, Doc Rivers was questioned about how this team will adapt at night. After moving on from Khris Middleton at the trade deadline, Lillard isn't playing at his best right now. He brought out the lack of touches from Kyle Kuzma.
With 12 rebounds and 31 points per game, Antetokounmpo leads Milwaukee. For the third consecutive season, Brook Lopez is averaging two blocks per game, and Lillard, who averages 25.5 points, has contributed 7.4 assists per game.
After Antetokounmpo and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (32.9), Jokic is third in the NBA in scoring, second in assists, third in rebounds, and third in steals.
As he heals from a calf injury that kept him out of five games prior to the All-Star break, Antetokounmpo's minutes restriction has increased. On Tuesday, he played 31 minutes.
Although this is the clubs' first meeting of the season, there has been a lot of buzz surrounding this clash in previous years.
Following the Nuggets' series sweep in the 2019–20 season, the two-game season set had been divided in each of the preceding four seasons.
Just over a year ago, Milwaukee defeated them 112-95 at home in their most recent meeting. Jokic had 29 points and 12 rebounds, while Antetokounmpo had 36 points and 18 rebounds.
Charlotte Hornets vs Dallas Mavericks Preview, What to Watch
The Dallas Mavericks, who suffered a heartbreaking defeat to the Los Angeles Lakers and former franchise star Luka Doncic, will host the slumping Charlotte Hornets on Thursday.
Dallas lost 107-99 to Luka's Lakers on the road Tuesday, the Mavericks' second straight defeat after losing 126-102 to the Golden State Warriors just two days earlier.
In his debut game, Doncic finished with a triple-double against a Mavericks team that had sent him to California three weeks prior.
Due to a groin injury, Anthony Davis, who was acquired by Dallas in the historic deal, was unable to participate on Tuesday.
Davis's left adductor strain would be reassessed in two weeks, it was revealed on February 20.
Against the Lakers, Kyrie Irving scored the most points for the Mavericks (35), followed by veteran Klay Thompson (22).
Meanwhile, as they wrap up a nine-game road trip, the young Hornets are looking for answers.
The Hornets defeated the Lakers 100-97 on February 19 after losing three straight to start the trip. But since that victory, Charlotte has dropped four straight games.
The Hornets have struggled with scoring throughout the season, and it has cost them recently as they have only eclipsed the 100-point milestone three times throughout the trip.
Tuesday's crushing defeat by the Warriors, 128-92, was their most recent defeat.
The Hornets struggled without their top scorer, LaMelo Ball, who was out due to an ankle ailment. KJ Simpson scored 16 points and Seth Curry added 14.
The injury report for Thursday's game does not include the 2020 first-round selection.
The Hornets won their most recent game at home earlier this year 110-105, while the two clubs have split their last ten meetings at five wins each.
New Orleans Pelicans vs Phoenix Suns Preview, What to Watch
The Phoenix Suns talk a lot about having a long postseason run, but their on-court performance is getting worse.
The Suns start a crucial two-game home series against the New Orleans Pelicans on Thursday night, and with 24 games remaining, they are out of the Western Conference play-in competition. On Friday, the teams will play again in Phoenix.
Before Wednesday's game, the Suns were in 10th place in the Western Conference, 2 1/2 games behind the Sacramento Kings.
Phoenix is a pitiful 2-9 this month and ended a 1-4 road trip with a 151-148 overtime loss to the Memphis Grizzlies on Tuesday, despite the persistent rumors that the team is set to make a splash.
With 1.9 seconds remaining in regulation, Memphis standout Ja Morant made the game-winning shot to force overtime. The Grizzlies scored the game's final seven points in overtime after the Suns squandered a four-point advantage.
Among the positive aspects were Phoenix players scoring 20 points five times for the first time since November 1990.
Devin Booker finished with 28 points and 10 assists, Kevin Durant finished with 26 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 assists, Bradley Beal finished with 24 points and 11 assists, Bol Bol finished with 23 points and 8 rebounds, and Grayson Allen scored 21 points off the bench and made six 3-pointers.
New Orleans has won three of its last four games, including a two-game home sweep of the San Antonio Spurs, despite being well out of the playoff picture.
On Sunday and Tuesday, the Pelicans defeated the Spurs 114-96 and 109-103, respectively. After being acquired from the Toronto Raptors, rookie Kelly Olynyk made an immediate impression with a combined 20 points and 27 rebounds in the two wins.
Olynyk will rest on the front end of the back-to-back versus Phoenix, so he won't be wearing a suit on Thursday.
With 22 points and nine rebounds on Sunday, Williamson was the dominant player. Karlo Matkovic scored 19 points off the bench, a career-high total, on 8 of 9 shots.
Minnesota Timberwolves vs Los Angeles Lakers Preview, What to Watch
The Minnesota Timberwolves, who defeated the best in the West this week, will travel to Los Angeles on Thursday to play the Lakers, another team that is ahead of them in the conference standings.
The Timberwolves arrive following Monday's 131–128 away triumph over the Oklahoma City Thunder, as Minnesota overcame a 25-point hole in the third quarter to force overtime. Even so, with 3:55 remaining in regulation, they were behind 121-105.
When Minnesota fell behind 25 points against the Charlotte Hornets in 1996, they tied the team record for the largest comeback.
Minnesota shot 55.6 percent in the second half and 59.1 percent in the fourth quarter, led by 27 points and 10 rebounds from Jaden McDaniels and 22 points and 11 rebounds from Naz Reid. In the fourth quarter and overtime, they converted all 22 of their free-throw attempts.
The Timberwolves are aware that they can do even better. Rudy Gobert (back), Donte DiVincenzo (toe), and Julius Randle (groin) were out for the resounding win, while star Anthony Edwards played despite suffering a strained calf.
The win made up for a 130-123 defeat to Oklahoma City at home the day before.
Even though he was 1-of-6 from 3-point range and only played 3:30 in the fourth quarter and 1:48 in overtime, Edwards still finished with 17 points and 13 rebounds.
In overtime, the Timberwolves only hit one of their nine shots from the field, but they went 8 for 8 from the free-throw line in the last five minutes to win the game.
Finch moved his defense to a zone for extended periods of time, and even though Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored a game-high 39 points, he only had six in the fourth and three in overtime.
The Lakers, who have been 13-3 since January 21, have been revitalized for a month. They were given a boost during that time when Luka Doncic was traded from the Dallas Mavericks for Anthony Davis and Max Christie.
Since Doncic's arrival, the Lakers have gone 3-2, indicating a sluggish transition. However, the well-known new player recorded a triple-double in a victory over his old team on Tuesday after scoring 32 points, pulling down 10 rebounds, and dishing out seven assists in a road win over the Denver Nuggets on Saturday.
In the 107-99 victory over the Mavericks at home, Doncic recorded 19 points, 15 rebounds, and 12 assists in addition to three steals and two blocks. He was only 1-of-7 from 3-point range and 6-of-17 from the field, but the total stats helped mask that.
LeBron James, 40, is still contributing to the Lakers' success. In 37 minutes of action against Dallas, he scored 27 points, pulled down 12 rebounds, and played strong defense.
