Oklahoma City Thunder vs Portland Trail Blazers Preview, What to Watch
On Sunday, the Portland Trail Blazers will take on the visiting Oklahoma City Thunder, who will test their season-long four-game winning streak.
The Western Conference-leading Thunder, who are attempting to recover from a 121-115 home loss to the Dallas Mavericks on Thursday, will play Portland at the start of a seven-game homestand.
On Friday, the Blazers defeated Charlotte 102-97 while limiting the Hornets to 37.6 percent shooting, putting on another impressive defensive display.
The outstanding performance followed Portland's 101-79 victory over the Magic, which held Orlando to a season-low point total.
On Friday, Jerami Grant added 22 points to Anfernee Simons' 27 points against Charlotte.
Before starting their current winning streak, the rebuilding Blazers suffered five straight losses. The play of rookie center Donovan Clingan, who finished with 13 rebounds and four blocks in the victory over Charlotte, has been among the most encouraging aspects.
Coach Chauncey Billups of Portland also gushed about the 7-foot-2 Clingan, the seventh pick in the draft last April.
Since April 3, 2021, the Blazers are looking for their first victory over Oklahoma City. Since then, Portland has lost 14 in a row, including two this season.
The Mavericks, who defeated Oklahoma City 3-1 on Thursday to win the season series, are among the few teams that have challenged the Thunder (36-8) this season.
Isaiah Joe, the Thunder's backup guard, was unable to play Thursday after missing the previous two games due to sickness. In ten games this month, Joe's 3-point shooting percentage is 49.2 percent.
Oklahoma City ended a 12-game winning streak on its home court on Thursday, suffering its first home loss since Nov. 17.
In the defeat to Dallas, Jalen Williams scored 33 points, matching his season high, while All-Star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander finished with 31 points following a career-high 54 points in Wednesday's victory over Utah at home.
Gilgeous-Alexander, who averages 32 points, 6.1 assists, and 5.3 rebounds, is making a compelling case for his first MVP Award. He is hitting 34.8 percent from three-point range and 52.9 percent from the field.
In addition to his offensive contributions, Gilgeous-Alexander is a key factor in the Thunder's league-high 18.4 turnovers per game as of Saturday. With 2.0 thefts per game, he leads the team.
To start their 12-game home winning run, the Thunder defeated the Blazers 109-99 on November 20 after winning 137-114 at Portland on November 1.
