Los Angeles Lakers vs Charlotte Hornets Preview, What to Watch
The Charlotte Hornets are determined to move forward at full speed. A lot of that is dependent on the staff that is available.
When the Hornets play the visiting Los Angeles Lakers on Monday night, it will be critical to have a squad that is close to full strength.
"There's a lot of talk about just trying to keep our foot on the gas and not let up," Charles Lee, the coach of the Hornets, stated.
The Lakers defeated Golden State 118-108 on Saturday night to win the first of a six-game road trip and advance across the continent. For the first time in a month, they have won three straight games.
In their last six games, the Hornets have won four of them.
Miles Bridges, LaMelo Ball, and Seth Curry all returned to play in Saturday night's 123-92 home victory against the New Orleans Pelicans after missing a game against the Portland Trail Blazers the previous evening due to injury, causing Charlotte to have a lot of roster turnover recently.
Due to foot pain, Hornets center Mark Williams missed the team's victory over the Pelicans.
Even while everything appears to be going well, you never know what the Charlotte injury report will reveal before the match on Monday.
When Ball is in the lineup, his impact is significant. Ball, who leads the team in scoring at 28.9 points per game, has led Charlotte in scoring six times in the last nine games, despite lacking some games.
The Hornets want to unleash Ball, who is known for his offensive inventiveness.
With 36 points and 13 rebounds on Saturday against the Warriors, Anthony Davis had one of his best performances of the season. He leads the Lakers with 25.9 points and 11.9 rebounds.
Although LeBron James (23.7 points, 9.0 assists) and Davis are the Lakers' mainstays, Los Angeles gained a support player on Saturday when Jared Vanderbilt made his season debut following a knee injury. In 12 minutes, he had two points, two assists, and four rebounds.
On Saturday, Los Angeles put a stop to a three-game road losing streak. Four games in six nights on the East Coast will begin with the stopover in Charlotte.
As of right now, Charlotte is 1-1 on a nine-game homestand that finishes on February 7. Saturday's resounding victory over New Orleans provided a unique chance to dominate the whole game.
In Williams' absence, Moussa Diabate's 13 rebounds off the bench helped the Hornets. Additionally, it allowed DaQuan Jeffries to play 27 minutes and finish with six points and seven rebounds.
Detroit Pistons vs Cleveland Cavaliers Preview, What to Watch
The Cleveland Cavaliers' defense has becoming increasingly problematic as they prepare to play the visiting Detroit Pistons on Monday in an attempt to end a season-long three-game losing streak.
The Cavaliers, who lead the Eastern Conference, fell to the Houston Rockets 135-131 on Saturday, their second setback in four days. At home, Cleveland lost 21-3.
On Saturday, the Cavaliers had 39 points from Darius Garland and 33 from Donovan Mitchell. The Cavaliers had trouble keeping up with the Rockets, who had four starters score 20 points, while shooting 51.6 percent from the field and 43.6 percent from three-point range.
The Rockets made 46.4 percent of their shots from beyond the arc and 54.9 percent of their shots from the field.
In Saturday's defeat, Cleveland, which has given up 114 points or more in eight of its 12 games this month, failed to hold Houston big men Steven Adams and Alperen Sengun in check. Together, the two scored 40 points and pulled down 12 rebounds.
Evan Mobley, a forward for Cleveland, made his first appearance since missing four games due to a strained right calf on Saturday, playing 29 minutes. He finished with two blocks, seven points, and eight rebounds.
Atkinson hasn't exactly been thrilled with the Cavaliers' recent run, but he thinks the club might gain from the defeats.
With ten consecutive victories, including a 113-101 triumph at home on October 25, the Cavaliers have had a lot of success against Detroit in recent years.
The Pistons lost 121-113 against the Orlando Magic on Saturday, ending their four-game winning streak on the road. Detroit's top scorer, Cade Cunningham, finished with 35 points, 11 assists, and five rebounds.
There were seven technical fouls, one egregious foul, and numerous official reviews throughout the actual game. J.B. Bickerstaff, the coach of the Pistons, was dismissed halfway through the fourth quarter.
The performance of forward Ausar Thompson, who missed two games earlier this month owing to sickness, gave Bickerstaff hope. In a season-high 29 minutes versus Orlando, he finished with 16 points, 5 rebounds, 4 steals, and a block.
If forward Tobias Harris is unable to participate on Monday, Thompson might have to take on a bigger role. Harris left the game early in the third quarter in the loss to Orlando with a head injury
Houston Rockets vs Boston Celtics Preview, What to Watch
The visiting Houston Rockets have to deal with the fact that Derrick White of the Boston Celtics seems to have recovered from his shooting slump when the team plays on Monday night, as if playing the reigning NBA champions on the road wasn't enough.
White shot 37.4 percent in the team's first 12 January games going into Saturday's game against the Dallas Mavericks. He then scored 23 points to help the Celtics win 122-107 to wrap up a four-game road trip.
White made seven of his next ten shots, including four 3-pointers, after missing his first six, three of which were from 3-point range. In just the third quarter, he scored sixteen points.
Boston's starting lineup scored 104 points against Dallas as each starter had at least 17 points. The Celtics made 20 of their 52 attempts from 3-point range (38.5 percent).
Houston has won two in a row and is 9-1 in road games since Dec. 8. The Rockets have been receiving strong play from 6-foot-7 forward Amen Thompson, who had 23 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists in Saturday's 135-131 road victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Thompson, the fourth pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, is averaging 13.2 points per game this season, but that is up to 17.7 points in his last 10 games. He had at least 10 rebounds in three of his last four games.
Sacramento Kings vs Brooklyn Nets Preview, What to Watch
In an attempt to get back to winning ways in the NBA, the Sacramento Kings travel to play the floundering Brooklyn Nets. Their hosts are ranked 12th in the East Conference, while the Kings are ranked 10th in the Western Conference. Continue reading to see our prediction for this match.
The Nets are in dire need of a win after losing six straight games. In their last 19 games, Jordi Fernandez's team has only triumphed three times. They are now farther out of the playoff spots as a result of their bad play.
Brooklyn is five games out of 10th place with a 14-32 record. The Heat defeated the Nets 106-97 at home last time out, despite the Nets having won the rematch in Sacramento back in November.
Brooklyn's most recent injury report names seven players.
The last two games have been losses for the Kings. The Kings have dropped consecutive games for the first time under new coach Doug Christie.
Since he took charge a few days after Christmas, they have been among the top teams. The Kings had only lost once in 11 games before to this skid.
They let up more than 130 points in both of their road losses to the Nuggets and Knicks. The Kings, who don't have any injury concerns, lost 143-120 to the Knicks.
In 43 games this season, that was their 20th loss.
Orlando Magic vs Miami Heat Preview, What to Watch
The Orlando Magic will play the Miami Heat on Monday night after regaining their desired starting lineup.
With Paulo Banchero, Franz Wagner, Jalen Suggs, Wendell Carter Jr., and Kentavius Caldwell-Pope in the starting lineup, the Magic defeated the Detroit Pistons 121-113 on Saturday night, snapping a five-game losing run.
The Magic were able to deploy their starting five for the first time since October.
After missing ten games because of a back ailment, Suggs made his comeback on Saturday. In 16 minutes, he scored 8 points.
Suggs is the foundation of Orlando's defense because of his constant drive. With him out, the Magic lost 2–8.
Banchero has only appeared in 13 of Orlando's 47 games, yet he leads the team in scoring average (24.5), rebounds (8.1), and assists (4.8).
Wagner, who averages 24.5 points per game, has only played in 27 games. In addition, Wagner leads the club in steals (1.6) and assists (5.5).
With 34 games played, Carter's average is 8.5 points and 7.3 rebounds.
With 45 games played, Caldwell-Pope has been the healthiest member of this bunch. However, with an average of 9.2 points, he is more of a glue person.
Since adding rookie 7-footer Kel'el Ware to the starting lineup, the Heat have a 1-2 record.
Ware is averaging 16.3 points, 10.3 rebounds, and 2.0 blocks across those three games. He is hitting 38.0 3-pointers, 74.2 free throws, and 55.1 percent from the field this season.
The career of 20-year-old Ware is booming, but the 35-year-old Jimmy Butler of the Heat seems to be going in the other direction.
The Heat have suspended Butler twice this season, once for seven games and again for two games. Butler has requested a trade. Both penalties were for actions that were bad for the club, such as skipping a flight before Thursday's Heat game in Milwaukee.
Butler's second suspension ended on Saturday following Miami's victory over the Brooklyn Nets, the team's host.
Butler is therefore anticipated to play on Monday. However, certain things remain unknown.
Will he be suspended once more? Will he put forth his best effort if he plays? Or will he be traded by the Heat prior to Monday's tip-off?
Tyler Herro leads Miami in assists (5.2) and scoring (24.0) while Butler is in limbo.
Miami's top rebounder (10.0) and third scorer (15.6) is Bam Adebayo. Butler comes in second with an average of 17.0.
Terry Rozier, who has participated in 641 NBA games and started 379 of them, has had a somewhat disappointing season. He has a 14.1 career scoring average. However, Rozier is only averaging 11.9 points this season, despite starting 21 of his 40 games.
Memphis Grizzlies vs New York Knicks Preview, What to Watch
The New York Knicks have another opportunity to demonstrate their abilities against other playoff-bound teams during their season's last extended homestand.
In their first meeting of the season, the Knicks will host the resurgent Memphis Grizzlies on Monday night, continuing their five-game homestand.
The Knicks defeated the Sacramento Kings 143-120 and the Grizzlies defeated the Utah Jazz 125-103 at home on Saturday night, and both teams were off on Sunday.
The victory was the Knicks' third consecutive victory after a 3-6 run from January 3–17, during which New York went 1-4 against teams that had at least a share of a guaranteed postseason berth going into Sunday.
While the following four teams compete in the play-in tournament to determine the final two slots, the top six teams in each conference go to the postseason.
The Knicks are 22-7 against all other teams this season and 8-9 against those that presently hold at least a portion of a guaranteed postseason berth. In the last four games of their homestand, New York will play four opponents from the top six Western Conference, giving them an opportunity to improve their record against contenders.
The Knicks will host the fourth-place Denver Nuggets on Wednesday after their game against the third-place Grizzlies. On Saturday, they will play the fifth-place Los Angeles Lakers, and on February 3, they will play the second-place Houston Rockets.
in three days off, the Knicks hope their fast start against the Kings on Saturday—they jumped out to a 38-25 lead in the first quarter—will indicate they'll be prepared for the more conventional homestand schedule.
The Grizzlies, who hold the NBA's longest winning run, are the team that has been winning more consistently lately. Memphis, which previously won six straight from November 20 to December 1, has the longest six-game stretch of the season.
The Grizzlies won by at least 10 points for the fifth time in their recent history on Saturday, with Jalen Jackson Jr. scoring 28 points to spearhead another balanced scoring effort. Six players finished in double figures.
Eleven different players have scored in double figures over the last six games -- a span in which star guard Ja Morant has been sidelined twice due to a right foot injury and an illness.
Rookie center Zach Edey provided more evidence of the Grizzlies' depth by following up a 13-point performance Friday in a win over New Orleans with a 19-point outing Saturday night. The back-to-back double-digit scoring efforts were the first for Edey since Dec. 26-27.
New Orleans Pelicans vs Toronto Raptors Preview, What to Watch
The NBA's top-seeded Toronto Raptors will host the New Orleans Pelicans in an attempt to win four straight games. Both teams are in the bottom three of their conferences after having a difficult season. Our prediction for this match is below.
This season, the Raptors are experiencing their finest run of play. Darko Rajakovic's team is on a three-match winning streak and has won five of their previous six games.
They have defeated the Warriors, Celtics, Magic, and Hawks twice in this purple patch. Toronto just won 117-94 in Atlanta, where it is coming off a back-to-back.
Their current standing is 13-32. The injury report lists Immanuel Quickley, Ochai Agbaji, and Kelly Olynyk as daily.
The Pelicans want to end their two-game losing streak. Both losses occurred in Memphis and Charlotte while traveling. The Hornets, fellow strugglers, defeated Willie Green's team 123-92 in the previous game.
They have won four straight games for the first time this season before to this skid. They are now the second-worst team in the Western Conference with a 12-34 record.
The team's poise has been disturbed by injuries. Brandon Ingram and Herb Jones are not traveling, and DeJounter Murray is questionable.
Denver Nuggets vs Chicago Bulls Preview, What to Watch
The next NBA game the Denver Nuggets play is on the road against the Chicago Bulls. The Bulls are now ranked 10th in the East, while the Nuggets have the fourth-best record in the Western Conference. Our prediction for this match is below.
The Bulls enter this match in a slump, having only won once in their last eight games. The Bulls are currently on a two-game losing streak after losing to the 76ers 109-97 at home.
They had previously lost a 25-point thumping to the Warriors at Golden State, giving up 131 points. This season, Chicago's home record is among the worst.
They presently have five straight losses at United Centre, where their record stands at 8-16.
After losing to the Timberwolves last time out, the Nuggets are looking to bounce back. Mike Malone's team started a five-game road trip with a 133-104 defeat.
They had won four in a row and only lost once in nine games prior to the defeat. Half of Denver's victories away from home have contributed to their 28-17 record.
Since the Nuggets have defeated the Bulls in their last two meetings, there aren't any serious injury concerns for this trip.
Atlanta Hawks vs Minnesota Timberwolves Preview, What to Watch
Mike Conley, a guard with the Minnesota Timberwolves, is aware that this season has been difficult for him and his teammates due to inconsistency.
Perhaps, just possibly, that pattern is starting to shift. The Timberwolves, who are coming off one of their greatest wins of the season, will play the Atlanta Hawks on Monday night in Minneapolis in an attempt to win three straight games.
The Timberwolves defeated the Denver Nuggets 133-104 at home on Saturday afternoon, demonstrating the results of their hard work. Three days prior to the triumph, Minnesota defeated the Dallas Mavericks 115-114 on the road.
As the Timberwolves look to stay hot, Atlanta is eager to snap a four-game losing streak. The Hawks are coming off a 117-94 loss at home against the Toronto Raptors on Saturday.
Recent injuries have added to the Hawks' challenges. Jalen Johnson (shoulder) and De'Andre Hunter (illness) did not play in the team's most recent game, and their status is day-to-day heading into Monday's game at Minnesota.
Reigning No. 1 overall pick Zaccharie Risacher also is sidelined because of a thigh injury. The 19-year-old is averaging 10.5 points and 3.5 rebounds in his rookie season.
Hawks coach Quin Snyder said the injuries have forced others to take on new roles, which has led to an increase in turnovers and other miscues.
The Timberwolves are also down a couple of players, Donte DiVincenzo (toe) and rookie Terrence Shannon Jr. (ankle), heading into Monday. DiVincenzo learned recently that he expects to avoid surgery, but there is no immediate timetable for his return.
Trae Young is Atlanta's top scorer with 22.8 points per game to go along with 11.5 assists. Johnson ranks second with 18.9 points and a team-high 10.0 rebounds.
Minnesota's top scorer, Anthony Edwards, averages 26.3 points per game on 44.5 percent shooting. Julius Randle is scoring 18.9 points and pulling down 7.3 rebounds on average every game.
According to Naz Reid (13.6 points per game), the Timberwolves' recent progress is encouraging for the future.
Washington Wizards vs Dallas Mavericks Preview, What to Watch
The struggling Washington Wizards visit the Dallas Mavericks on Monday in an attempt to gain momentum in the weeks leading up to the All-Star break.
Maxi Kleber joined Dallas' growing list of injured players, who had been without star Luka Doncic since late December because of a calf ailment. In Saturday's NBA Finals rematch against the Boston Celtics, Kleber suffered a foot fracture.
Lately, the Mavericks have had to adopt that mindset more and more. With 9.1 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game, Dereck Lively II is an all-around performer who has missed the last six games due to a stress fracture in his right ankle.
Lively does not have a set return date. Marc Stein said that Doncic might return to Dallas before to the All-Star break.
The Mavericks are attempting to stay ahead of the competition in the Western Conference until their All-NBA guard is in the starting lineup. Dallas is in seventh place in the Western Conference and has a 5-11 record since Doncic's Christmas Day injury.
Washington, however, has the worst record in the NBA and is stuck in the cellar of the East. The Wizards are riding a 13-game losing run, which is their second-longest slump of the season, as they finish a six-game road trip.
After losing 119-109 to Phoenix on Saturday, Washington has now lost four straight games by double digits, and 10 of the 13 games during this run have been decided by ten points or more.
But there were some bright spots for the struggling Wizards after the defeat in Phoenix. Washington lost each quarter of the second half after digging a huge hole in the first half and trailing by 15 at the break.
After the game, Wizards coach Brian Keefe stated that he hopes Washington would build on it.
With 30 points and 11 rebounds on Saturday, Kyle Kuzma ended a three-game scoring skid and recorded his first double-double since October 28.
Kuzma leads Washington in scoring with 14.6 points per game, second only to Jordan Poole (21.4 points per game). Washington's offense, which averages 107.8 points per game and ranks fourth-fewest in the NBA through games played on Saturdays, has struggled all season to find consistent scoring.
However, Dallas will try to take advantage of Washington's league-worst 122.1 points per game allowed, which has been particularly annoying.
The Mavericks have missed 11 of their last 17 games, despite their season-long average of 115.1 points per game. With Doncic (28.1 ppg) sidelined, Dallas has no other scoring option who can score at least 14 points every night, despite Kyrie Irving's average of 24.4 points per game.
Los Angeles Clippers vs Phoenix Suns Preview, What to Watch
Entering Monday night's home game against the Los Angeles Clippers, who have won six of their last eight games, the Phoenix Suns have won seven of their last nine games.
However, a disagreement between coach Mike Budenholzer and erstwhile starting center Jusuf Nurkic is undermining the Suns' comeback.
Nurkic stated that he and Budenholzer had "no relationship" and hadn't spoken in two months following Saturday night's victory over the Washington Wizards.
"Just be a pro and do the best I can," Nurkic stated, according to the Arizona Republic. "There is no chaos or bringing that to this team; just work and be prepared for whatever comes along.
They have plenty of it already. I'm working really hard for something else while trying to be as professional as possible."
The two have spoken, according to Budenholzer, but playing time will be given to those who earn it.
The Suns are 7-2 and Nurkic has missed the last nine games. On January 15, Phoenix also acquired Nick Richards from Charlotte. In his four games with the team, the 7-footer has posted two double-doubles, including 20 points and a career-high 19 rebounds in the 119-109 victory over Washington.
Sixth in the Western Conference, the Clippers are embarking on a four-game road trip. They also just defeated the visiting Milwaukee Bucks 127-117, a 10-point victory.
Normal Powell scored 33 points for the Clippers, while James Harden scored 40 points. With the Clippers, the veteran backup has thrived in a starting position, averaging a career-high 23.9 points per game so far this season.
At just 106.8 points per game, the Clippers have the third-best defense in the NBA. They only made seven turnovers on Saturday night, which is significantly less than their season average of 16.2.
In October, Phoenix defeated the Clippers twice in Los Angeles by a total of nine points.
Devin Booker scores 25.5 points per game, while Kevin Durant leads the Suns with 27.2 points.
